Aghogan shares this six month long bed bug nightmare with us after spending a thousand dollars on an exterminator. After you read her story, we’ll discuss what she could have done differently.
6 months! 6 months of misery. 6 months of anxiety. 6 months of constantly looking over my shoulder. I don’t think I have slept normal in 6 LONG MONTHS. Early January of this year I woke to a bug on my pillow. I thought it was a tick believe it or not because at this point I had never seen a bed bug before.
A few weeks later I woke up and saw another one then I took a closer look at my pillow (which then I saw a few babies too) I immediately started freaking out doing research as to what in the heck I was dealing with. My husband and I found out quickly that it was bedbugs. First thing I did was call my Uncle because he’s an exterminator for Terminix, of course he got a me a few discounts but it still cost us OVER $1,000 to treat our whole house once and 3 months of treatment to the bedroom where we had them secluded to.
We have COMPLETELY sealed off that entire bedroom which mind you is the only one with a air conditioning vent in it… Almost all of our clothes packed in black garbage bags ALL WINTER on the porch (in Ohio it is mainly Jan-March) My husband and I SERIOUSLY slept on the living room floor and couch for 4 out of the 6 months.
Month 5 we bought a air mattress and slept in a different room of the house. This July 1st (after the stress of this almost RUINED our marriage due to Money, not being able to sleep together, the anxiety this has given me, grouchiness from horrible sleep) we FINALLY got a BRAND NEW BED!
We slept with the mattress plastic on until my Bed Bug Protectors came for the mattress and boxsprings. Then I FINALLY after 6 months washed and dried (multiple times mind you) ALL of those clothes throwing some away from mold. I was feeling pretty confident that they were pretty much GONE….
Then it happened… 🙁 About a week ago I found one RANDOMLY I might add CRAWLING ACROSS MY KITCHEN COUNTER… How in the heck did that happen?! I have no clue! Few days later came out of the bathroom found 1 crawling on my couch?! In 6 months I had NEVER seen any anywhere except for that bed room THEN TODAY about 1 hour ago I was laying in bed and out of the corner of my eye I see this teeenny tiny Yellow See through bug running on my sheet that I just changed YESTERDAY! I kill it, look at it really close, BEDBUG (o.o) FURIOUS! Look again 3 of these blood suckers!
I immediately get up rip my sheets off, pillows, blankets, pillow cases go in the basement and throw this stuff in the dryer for 100min on HIGH HEAT. Open a pillow case and BOOM there it was a big stupid ugly bed bug! How in the world did this happen? I have taken ever precaution, Spayed the whole carpet with bed bug spray BEFORE putting the new bed in went from plastic straight to bed bug covers. I have NO bed skirt and nothing that can touch the floor!
I just want to cry. That’s it. I am miserable. This is destroying me. I can’t take it anymore. I don’t know what to do. Makes me want to just grab some clothes and abandon my house! 🙁 I can’t afford to spend thousands on an exterminator again!!!!
Suggestions for Aghogan’s bed bug extermination
The first thing that comes to mind is that somehow, the bed bug is making its way into your home, the question is how? It sounds like Terminix did a good job at exterminating them, but somehow they reappeared.
It is very possible that you are visiting someone that has an infestation, or someone with an infestation is visiting you, and the problem starts all over again. I’m not making excuses for Terminix, and they could have very well missed an area, but more likely a bed bug hitched a ride on someone or you stored something with a bed bug in it that Terminax couldn’t get to.
Regardless, I’d pay special attention to who your visiting or who is visiting you. Either way, you need to find their hide out! After feeding, the bed bug is going to head back to its nest, and that nest will be usually be about six feet away from you. Bed bugs can crawl up the legs of the bed, so it doesn’t matter if your sheets are touching the floor or not – most likely, they are in your bed frame or headboard anyway.
If you are in an apartment, the apartment could have tried exterminating their own bugs with a repellant which simply caused them move to a new location (usually through the electrical outlets) which just happens to be your home!
Once you’ve found the nest, the rest is easy. The exterminator should have given you a list of things you need to do before they treat and it’s imperative that list be followed to the letter! Should you hire an exterminator, make sure you get a guarantee! If you can’t afford the cost, then do it yourself with food grade diatomaceous earth (bed bug dust).
